Cervical Length
Assessment
Ultrasound Scan
A cervical length assessment scan is a safe, non-invasive ultrasound examination used to measure the length of the cervix, the lower part of the uterus, during pregnancy. This scan helps healthcare providers monitor pregnancies where there may be a higher risk of preterm birth or complications.
It is particularly recommended for women with a history of preterm labour or other risk factors. The scan is typically performed transvaginally, is painless, quick, and provides valuable information to support pregnancy management.

What is the Cervical Length Assessment Scan?
This ultrasound scan measures the cervix’s length to help clinicians evaluate whether additional monitoring or interventions may be needed during pregnancy. While the scan provides useful information about cervical length, it is not a guarantee of pregnancy outcomes.
What are the indications/reasons for Cervical Length Assessment Scan?
Women with a history of preterm labour
Pregnancies considered high risk for preterm birth
Differentiating between true and false labour in women presenting with contractions
Monitoring for potential interventions if cervical shortening is suspected
Supporting planning for induction of labour or delivery, in consultation with your obstetrician
How is this scan performed?
The scan is usually performed transvaginally, and a full bladder is not required. You will lie on your back while a small, lubricated ultrasound probe is gently inserted into the vagina. Sound waves create images of the cervix, allowing the clinician to measure its length. The procedure is quick, painless, and typically takes just a few minutes.
