Detailed Health Assessment

Our Renal and Urinary Tract scan (often referred to as a KUB scan—Kidneys, Ureters, and Bladder) is a specialized imaging service designed to evaluate the health of your urinary system. Using high-frequency sound waves, our expert sonographers can detect structural changes, blockages, or inflammation that may be causing discomfort.

What We Evaluate

  • Kidneys: We assess the size, position, and structure of both kidneys, screening for kidney stones, cysts, tumors, or signs of infection (hydronephrosis).

  • Bladder: A detailed look at the bladder wall thickness, identifying stones, larger masses, or diverticula (small pouches in the bladder wall).

  • Urinary Function: We often perform a "pre- and post-void" assessment, measuring your bladder when full and again after emptying to check for urinary retention.

Women are more prone to urinary tract infections (UTIs) due to anatomical differences. Ultrasound scans can help clinicians understand the urinary tract’s structure and support ongoing monitoring of urinary health.

At Ultramsono, we also offer a combined pelvic and kidney ultrasound package for patients with a medical history of congenital anomalies or ongoing pelvic and urinary tract issues. For any questions regarding this combined option, please speak with your healthcare provider or our team.

This scan is highly recommended if you are experiencing:

  • Pain & Discomfort: Lower abdominal pain, "loin" (side) pain, or pain during urination.

  • Urinary Changes: Increased frequency, urgency, or a feeling that the bladder isn't fully emptying.

  • Recurrent Infections: Investigating the underlying causes of frequent UTIs.

  • Clinical Indicators: Blood in the urine (haematuria), monitoring known kidney disease/stones, or follow-up for high blood pressure.

How to Prepare for Your Appointment

To get the clearest possible images of your bladder and lower urinary tract, a full bladder is essential.

  • Hydration: Please drink approximately 1 litre (about 2 pints) of water one hour before your appointment. Try not to empty your bladder until after the first part of your scan.

  • Fasting: In some cases, we may suggest fasting for a few hours to reduce bowel gas, which helps us see the kidneys more clearly. We will confirm this with you upon booking.

  • Clothing: We recommend wearing a two-piece outfit (e.g., a top and trousers/skirt) to allow easy access to the abdominal area.

  • Medications: Continue taking any regular medications as prescribed.

Fast Results in Kensington
