Early Pregnancy (6–10 Weeks)

Ultrasound Scan

An Early Pregnancy Scan (also known as a Viability Scan) is recommended between 6 and 10 weeks of pregnancy. This safe and routine ultrasound helps confirm that your pregnancy is developing inside the uterus and identifies whether you are expecting one or more babies. It also provides an estimated due date (EDD) based on the size and development of your baby at this early stage.

Many expectant parents choose to book this scan for reassurance in the first trimester, especially if they have experienced bleeding, discomfort, or previous pregnancy complications such as miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, or prior C-sections. The early pregnancy scan offers valuable information and peace of mind, helping your clinician monitor your wellbeing and provide guidance for the next steps in your pregnancy journey.

How is the Scan Performed?

In most cases, the early pregnancy scan is performed transabdominally, where an ultrasound probe is gently moved over your lower abdomen. A full bladder is required for this type of scan to help obtain clearer images.

In some situations, particularly if the pregnancy is still very early and not clearly visible through the abdomen, a transvaginal scan may be recommended. This involves a small, lubricated probe being gently inserted into the vagina to provide a closer view of the uterus.

Both scan methods are safe, routine, and generally comfortable. If you have a latex allergy or any concerns, please inform the sonographer before your appointment so they can make appropriate adjustments to ensure your comfort.

What Can an Early Pregnancy Scan Show?

  • Confirmation of a viable intrauterine pregnancy

  • Detection of a single or multiple pregnancy

  • Measurement of the baby’s heartbeat and size

  • Estimation of gestational age and due date

  • Early assessment if there are symptoms such as bleeding or pain

  • Exclusion of ectopic pregnancy, especially in those with previous C-sections or risk factors

  • Early ultrasound is a valuable part of early pregnancy care, providing reassurance and essential information for expectant parents.

What are the preparations for an Early Pregnancy scan?

If you are having a transabdominal scan, please drink approximately one litre of water about one hour before your appointment to ensure a comfortably full bladder. If you are having a transvaginal scan, a full bladder is not required. You may eat and drink as normal before your appointment.
