What is Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) Ultrasound?
An Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) is a weakened, bulging section of the abdominal aorta. AAA can be asymptomatic but poses a serious risk if it ruptures. Ultrasound allows healthcare professionals to visualize the aorta, measure its diameter, and monitor aneurysms over time. Regular screening is recommended for:
Men over 65
Individuals with a family history of AAA
Patients with a history of smoking
Early detection of AAA can prevent life-threatening complications and improve long-term outcomes.
What are the reasons for Abdominal Aorta Aneurysm (AAA) Scan
Men aged 65 and above
Chest, abdominal, or back pain
Shortness of breath
A pulsating lump or sensation in the abdomen
What are the reasons for Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) Scan?
Pain, swelling, or redness in the legs or arms
Pain on calf compression
A positive D-dimer blood test
What is Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) Ultrasound?
Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) occurs when a blood clot forms in one of the deep veins, usually in the legs. DVT can be life-threatening if the clot travels to the lungs, causing a pulmonary embolism. Ultrasound is an essential tool for detecting clots, monitoring treatment progress, and preventing complications.
What are the preparations for Vascular Scan?
For a Vascular Scan, wear loose, comfortable clothing and remove any jewellery or clothing covering the area being scanned. If you are having an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) scan, fasting for 4–6 hours beforehand is required to ensure clear imaging.
