Endometrial Thickness
Ultrasound Scan
An Endometrial Thickness Ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive diagnostic examination used to precisely evaluate the lining of the uterus. This specialised scan is a vital tool for women navigating fertility evaluations, those requiring consistent monitoring while on Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), or individuals seeking a proactive assessment of their pelvic health.
By providing detailed insights into the state of the endometrial lining, this scan allows clinicians to identify the optimal window for ovulation and embryo implantation during fertility planning. For postmenopausal patients, it serves as an essential monitoring tool to track structural changes in the uterine lining alongside routine medical care, ensuring any variations are professionally assessed with clinical accuracy.

The Examination Process
To ensure the highest diagnostic accuracy when measuring the uterine lining, a transvaginal (internal) ultrasound is the gold standard and generally the preferred method. This approach allows the probe to be positioned closer to the uterus, providing the sharp, high-resolution images necessary for precise millimetre measurements.
In certain clinical scenarios, or based on patient preference, a transabdominal (external) scan may be performed across the lower abdomen. Your sonographer will discuss the most suitable approach with you on the day, ensuring the method chosen aligns with your individual health requirements.
Regardless of the technique used, the procedure is safe, routine, and generally well-tolerated. Our specialist team is committed to providing a supportive environment, and you will be able to return to your normal daily activities immediately following your appointment.
Preparation for Your Scan
One of the advantages of a dedicated Endometrial Thickness Scan is the straightforward preparation involved:
No Complex Preparation: Unlike many other abdominal scans, there are no dietary or fasting requirements.
Bladder Requirements: For a transvaginal scan, a full bladder is not required; you will be invited to empty your bladder just before the examination begins. If a transabdominal scan is necessary, arriving with a comfortably full bladder is recommended.
Clinical Safety: We prioritise your health and hygiene. For internal scans, a single-use, hygienic probe cover is always used.
Personal Concerns: Please inform your sonographer if you have a known latex allergy or any specific anxieties regarding internal examinations so we can ensure your comfort throughout.
